OVERGEARING FOR FAST LAP TIMES

Assuming an ideal gear ratio of 20/81 (20 tooth pinion, 81 spur),
a gearing of 26/81 is considered overgearing.

Generally, overgearing puts a lot of strain on your electric motor,
batteries, and speed controller. This is especially true on a high
grip track.

But, there are times when me and some of the fast racers would
overgear on purpose.

For example, when I was racing 1/10 scale off-road buggies at
Queens Off-Roaders (one of the biggest indoor off-road track in
Queens, New York), there were times when the track was very
slippery.

The key to fast lap times was to have a smooth accelerating car
with a high top speed. By overgearing, it made our cars accelerate
smoothly and achieve a high top speed once the car gets moving.
The slippery condition lessened the strain on the motors, because
the slipping tires was easier for the motor to rotate than if the
car was running on a high grip track.

Also, when we are racing, the nervousness and excitement makes
us push on the trigger (accelerator) of our transmitter harder and
faster as compared to when we are relaxed. This will make the
car accelerate too fast, and if the tires loose grip, the car will go
out of control. Overgearing will help compensate for this
"nervous acceleration" condition.

Hope this helps. But remember, overgearing does put a strain
on your equipment, so avoid it if possible.
